Diary of a Home in Construction
Follow the sequence of events in the construction of this beautiful 4,000 square foot Custom Designed home. It is located in Putnam County, New York, with a panoramic view that includes the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains.
The first step in creating a Lindal Cedar Home is a site visit to walk the property and discuss options and ideas.
The construction driveway is laid to the site, trees are cleared and the ground is prepared.
"Would you believe the size of this machine!" Here's Jan B., owner-contractor, supervising the clearing.
Forms are constructed for the concrete walls of the Walk-out Daylight Basement.
The foundation is almost complete.
Large homes, comprising three to four trailers, can be unloaded in a day.
Materials can be placed around the site for ease of construction.
The materials are carefully stacked around the foundations, in order of construction.
Framing begins in the Walk-out Daylight Basement.
This "basement" has 9' ceilings and a view of the Hudson River!
The main floor structure is finished, with the loft floor structure nearing completion.
In this close-up you can see that the daylight basement ceiling beams have been upgraded to architectural grade laminated beams.
The framed walls are sheathed in plywood. Window openings are now apparent. Beam extensions are for the lower balconies, while the upper balcony is cantilevered.
As the prow takes shape, the cantelevered balconies and roof framing are in place.
As windows are installed the entire house is wrapped with an infiltration barrier.
An insert for a zero clearance fireplace is a popular choice. The chimney chaise can be faced with your choice of tile, stone, wood or sheetrock.
A Custom Hanger unites 7 beams at the very center of the complex roof. With over 50 years in Post & Beam construction, Lindal is uniquely qualified to provide this kind of structural beauty.
Spring arrives in the Hudson Highlands. This is a view from the master bedroom balcony.
The completed house as seen from the driveway.
Entry view - the front porch supports a balcony for the loft area. Note the 3 car garage in the Daylight Basement. The siding is Lindal's 1 x 8 beveled cedar siding.
