Accessory dwelling units are being constructed in the backyards of homes all over America to meet a new demand for multi generational housing. Combining the privacy and independence of a single family home but within watchful eye of the main house, they are economic solutions (owners don’t need to purchase a second building site, and usually share other amenities with the main house) for guest houses, elder housing or for the sometimes reluctant return of college grads or young married couples to the family homestead.

A Natural Collaboration

The 2010 Time Green Design 100 featured only two single family residences: a Turkel Design Dwell Home and the Mod.Fab, created by the students of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, under the direction of Professor Michael Johnson.

A Lindal Architects Collaborative charter member, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture has partnered with Lindal Cedar Homes to produce the original Mod.Fab design, along with two larger Mod.Fabs.

Mod.Fab 470 Floor Plan

This 470 square foot Mod.Fab is a striking one bedroom accessory dwelling unit with bold roof projections that extend the living space well beyond its modest footprint. The public and private areas of this home are separated via a covered breezeway. Appx. 12'x44'

Mod.Fab 700 Floor Plan

One bedroom, one bathroom, with an open layout floor plan in the kitchen and living areas. The bold roof projections extend the living space far beyond the interior footprint. Appx. 16'x44'

Mod.Fab 800 Floor Plan

Similar to the 700, this floor plan adds a second small bedroom (or study). Appx. 16'x48
