Canadian Company in Latest Time Magazine Green Style and Design 100

Vancouver, B.C., April 23, 2009 — Structurlam, a B.C. specialty wood-products company, will supply custom components for a house Time magazine has included in the May 4th Green Style and Design 100 issue. The stylish 21st-century-modern house, designed by Turkel Design for Lindal Cedar Homes, is also part of the Dwell Homes Collection being announced in May.

“Time selected us because of our longstanding practice of environmental consciousness, our new green building education programs and, most important, our ability to provide green design with style,” says Sig Benson, vice-president marketing of Lindal Cedar Homes. “We take a holistic approach to being green that begins with site-based home design, energy efficiency and the use of pre-engineered components made of sustainable, healthy building materials including Structurlam products.”

Structurlam has been the exclusive supplier of glulam beams, columns and arches to Lindal Cedar Homes for about 10 years. Its stunning engineered wood products are also used in such high-profile projects as the Frank Gehry renovation of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Richmond Olympic skating oval and the Raleigh Durham Airport in Virginia.

“We developed a very high quality product for Lindal,” says Structurlam president Bill Downing. Structurlam fingerjoints high-grade B.C. Interior Douglas fir into ribbons which are face-bonded using a special melamine glue. “Unlike most glulam beams which use resorcinol glue that leaves a dark line between the laminations, the melamine glue we use for Lindal is invisible,” says Downing. “The combination of the quality fibre, invisible lamination lines and intensive finishing provides Lindal with a product that is both strong and aesthetically superior.”

Lindal Cedar Homes was founded by Saskatchewan-born Walter Lindal in Toronto in 1945, before moving to Vancouver in 1962 to take advantage of the area’s abundant cedar.
